Daryl Coley: The Gospel Giant Returns After Battle With Illness

Saturday 26th August 2006

One of the giants of contemporary gospel DARYL COLEY has made a return to the scene with the unexpected re-issue of an old album. Tony Cummings reports.

Daryl Coley
Daryl Coley

Daryl Coley is one of the giants of contemporary gospel music. But, despite his big sales and critical acclaim the California-based singer seemed to drop out from the scene, only now returning with the re-issue of his 1986 album 'Just Daryl'. The re-issue, which has been updated with the addition of some newly recorded tracks, demonstrates to younger gospel fans what older ones have known for years - Daryl's silky smooth tone, spectacular range and dazzling jazz-like improvisational skills make him one of post war gospel's great vocalists. Journalist Andrea R Williams asked Daryl what he's been up to the last few years. He replied, "I have been going out preaching. I'm one of the ministers at Covenant Worship Center in Inglewood, California, under the pastorate of Bishop Andrew C. Turner, II. I have pastored a couple of churches down through the years. I'm 50 and I started preaching when I was 17; it's been a long time. I've always been preaching but people have never known that side of me - unless they have heard me. But recently, I've had about three years of just being sick - the result of diabetes. It swelled up and got really bad. So I've been just trying to recover from that. But I'm well on the way to recovery."

Daryl gives testimony of how his health problems have drawn him closer to God. "It's been a much closer walk. Right now I'm dealing with some things in my vision. But it's really been a great blessing. Instead of looking at people's faces, I've had to hear - with a discerning ear. He's sharpening things in me. I already have the guarantee of the healing of my vision. In fact, it's already been done. It's been amazing that with all that I've been dealing with and going through, God is still being glorified. People still see me doing what the Lord has been telling me to do. I have people say to me, 'If you're dealing with this and you still have your joy and are still preaching and singing, then I know that I can go through what I have to go through and trust God.'

"About a year ago, I was at a conference. A week before the conference, the Prelate, the Bishop over the conference, called to tell me that he was diagnosed with brain cancer and cancer of the spine. We immediately prayed and spoke healing. When I walked into the conference, he said that he had received his doctor's report and there was no cancer! His word to me was, 'I know you've been going through a lot the last few years and you've been such an inspiration to me. I believed that if the Lord is healing you that he would heal me also.' How amazing! So I'm not having a pity party; I'm rejoicing because for the purposes of the Kingdom, this is what it is. I'm just excited because God is working through this whole thing. This is really blowing my mind; I'm trippin' out! This is a wonderful thing. I know people would probably think I'm crazy but it's a wonderful thing because he's sharpening areas of my spirituality."

Daryl went on to explain how his very first album 'Just Daryl', originally released in 1986 on First Epistle Records, got its unexpected re-issue. "My son and my godson started a record company called Diego Music Group and I was the first artist to come out on the label. I do have three bonus tracks on there that I did with Paul Wright who we are in partnership with. The choir, the Voices Of Fulfillment, their CD dropped as well. It's an awesome, awesome choir. They have a song on there with the choir. It's wonderful. We do have six or seven artists in the wings that we're working with. It's a brand new record company; we're just excited because of what God has promised us. We're doing things with integrity. Since most of us have been artists, we already understand some of the struggles and disappointments some artists have had with record labels. I do have a new group of 10 guys; all of us sing. We go from soprano to bass. I'm also working on another solo project for me."

Daryl Coley: The Gospel Giant Returns After Battle With Illness

Over the years Daryl has experienced considerable success. 'Just Daryl' was nominated for a Grammy, his 1990 debut for Light Records 'He's Right On Time' made number three on the Gospel Charts while 1992's 'When The Music Stops' made it to number one. More recently, 1997's 'Live In Oakland: Home Again' featuring a scorching duet with Vanessa Bell Armstrong on "Don't Give On Jesus" was another major gospel hit. Yet for Daryl's own success the singer is a little concerned about the direction some gospel music is heading. "I'm glad for the advancement and I'm glad that it's popular. I am not disappointed - but uneasy - about how we're going about delivering the message. I know that it is music that touches the hearts and the spirit. But in reaching other people with the sound of today, I think we need to make sure we're delivering the message of Jesus Christ and not sacrificing the message just to do music. We need to bring forth a message that changes lives and changes attitudes. I love the fun we can have doing gospel music. But in the midst of having fun, we have to make sure that we deliver a solid message about Jesus Christ - who he is, what he has done, what he is capable of doing, and what he has promised us. We need to tell people where he's brought us from. They should be able to see that we are an example of people being changed; we must change. We can't sing gospel music and turn around and do the same things that everyone else is doing. There has to be a change, a difference. At the same time, it doesn't mean that artists who sing secular music are wrong. I know a lot of secular artists who are in theatre and they have a love for the Lord; it's a job for them. They continue to pray, seek God and do his will. I believe there's a place for all of us. If we are to minister to people, we have to be available in every genre and every place where music is. People will see Christ and feel his touch through us." CR

I am trying to find the words to "To Die Is Gain".
If anyone can help me it would be greatly
appreciated. His story is one of inspiration
and testimony to the fact that God can heal
and deliver you from anything.

I love Daryl Coley
I am not sure if you can truly understand the battle he has fought. In this world men seek power more so than GOD, if using GOD can get a man to power he speak as GODLY, yet his heart be far from it. Money is power, there is know other way to say it; it is. GOD is unseen and many that say that they are of GOD know him not.

Posted by Servant:min linton in e. chicago @ 12:12 on Nov 15 2006

Yet Daryl Coley a man whom love GOD, have been understated. The bible says that we will know a tree by the fruit that it bares; listen to the words that he sing, much GODLY fruit is bared. Yet where is his name among the giants? I personally thank you for labeling him here as a giant, yet his music is lightly played, even when they was newly released. Daryl sings song that are powerful his words speak truth, he compromise with no man, singing truth and power.

Posted by servant:min linton in e. chicago, in @ 12:16 on Nov 15 2006

. I have heard men of the world speak of so-called gospel artist, because their music is played side by side with worldly music. Much of this music is world. Let me say this because an artist says GOD once or twice in his project it those not make it music dedicated to GOD. Tupac Shakur, and others have said GOD in their music yet it was not gospel music. I mean honestly some of this so-called gospel music you could play in the club and people wouldn't notice a thing.

Posted by servant:min linton in e. chicago, IN @ 12:18 on Nov 15 2006

But D.C he song and sing songs that lift up the wonderful name of JESUS, and because he would not compromise to the world of power (money gain) he has been signed off by many. Because he would not conform to this world and make his life focus on money, laughing and kicking it with the hypocrites of this world he has been unwritten, and this my friend is the fight. I meet D.C. about four years ago in a little church on the south side of Chicago, and missed him at a large church also on the south side of Chicago.

Posted by Servant:min linton in East chicago,In @ 12:21 on Nov 15 2006

As minister myself I hear thing be hide close doors of the ministry, thing that should not be. I miss D.C that night because he did not show up, and after just a few minutes of being there I realized why. Men that seek power of money has placed GOD last, what man of GOD would want to be around such false spirits. I am sure he may have thought about it, being out cast is a hard thing, but to them that love the LORD we could not minister, or speak of GOD name, in vain. So you see his battle is deeper than what you wrote about, bigger then what’s seen, for the battle is fit in or be and outcast.

I've battled with kidney disease and dialysis for over eight years and it was a hard road to travel, but one day a friend introduce me to Daryl Coley through songs, and I then realized that it was through his gospel ministy that continually blessed and kept me. There were so many times I wanted to give up (knowing that God may not forgive me for self-murder), but through his songs it gave me strength to hold on and hold out, because in time I came to realize that this too shall pass. Thank you Daryl for keeping me on track and enabling me to do God"s will. Continue to let God use you through songs.

I'm a pastor now, and I still commune with the Lord while listening to Pastor Coley. Thanks for the article because I didn't know that he'd been sick.

Psalm 91 was playing, I didn't know it was a scripture at the time. I looked it up and read it. Then I was diagnosed with full blown AIDS. But I believed Psalm 91 and He said that I would be delivered. That was in 2000. I have'nt been on meds in 7 yrs. Though a 1000 fall at my side and 10,000 at my right hand...

I love the word of God, and you sing scripture. Man
does not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. And out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. AS WELL AS SINGS !!! May God Bless You and you know there's victory in Jesus. I don't know if you know about AIDS/HIV your blood T cell count is under 200
that's HIV. My T cell count was 3. The doctors told my parents to prepare for my buriel. But it's impssible for God to lie. By His stripes I was healed. So you continue to trust and keep the faith. Thanks for your
obedience to His call.

However, my very favorite song is 'To Live is Christ and to Die is Gain'! I would listen to this song and have it on repeat! So much so that I could sing every note (but never like Daryl) - He's one of kind!

I had the opportunity of seeing Minister Daryl Coley on a DVD of Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers. I was blessed by the anointing that was ever present on His humble servant. He immediately went into melody and immediately, with the direction of Bro. Lawrence, the preacher "had church". It was awesome! It was my first time seeing him, as well as ever hearing him and I was blessed of God to see how God used him in a marvelous and matchless way. I'll continue to pray for Rev. Coley. I, too, suffer with diabetes, but I live by Isaiah 53:5 which has brought me closer in my walk with God, but I continue to speak life over everything connected to me and don't allow anything negative to be deposited into my spirit. I thank God for you and your contribution for ministering God's Word through Gospel and through the ministry of Jesus Christ!

I love "when the music stops", I'm inspired by your testimony dealing with diabetes, this disease is worldwide and I'm yet dealing with it myself. I've been praying asking God to heal me and believe he is. I'm inspired to not allow it to defeat me and I'm definately taking control and yes , its strengthening me to establish a closer and better relationship with God.

The first time I heard Daryl Coley I immediately got excited. I was at work listening to the radio and when I heard that voice I was in awe!! I didn't know who it was, but when the station announced his name, I bought his CD right away. It was the one that had the song Romans 10 on it. I played that Cd every single day. Talk about being blessed by GOD. I just love Beyond the Veil. That whole CD just ministered to me. Every word!! I have gone through some rough times and his music is what helps me to continue to stand and believe in the promises of GOD!!! Daryl, I am so happy you are doing well and when I saw you on Donald Lawrences DVD singing "When Sunday Comes" I flipped. My kids thought I was crazy. Talk about being a man of God. You definitely have the favor of God upon you. I hope to see you in concert someday. Continue to minister and singing the praises of God. You are truly a blessing to me!!

I was so blessed to see Pastor Coley in concert on last night at the tribute Vanessa Bell Armstrong. I was also privileged to kind of sort of meet him. I just want you to know how much of a blessing you have been to my life. I echo many of the aforementioned sentiments. Through your ministry of musically ministered scripture, you taught me how to be humble and how humility in God is supposed to feel. Your music ministered to me and taught me what true worship felt like and it ushered me into the holy place with God where I would tune all of the issues of the world out and just let him literally "Speak to my Heart". You gave me the confidence to sing. It was in me and I did not realize it, but through trying to sing your words, God released it. I thank God for you and I know you are healed because God knows I still need you to keep singing His word and keep ministering to me. I am truly in awe of the God that is you and in all that you do. I love you and appreciate God for you. It's already done! Healing and total restoration, in Jesus name! Amen.

Pastor Coley, you are a worshipper and when you sing Holy Spirit take control. When I observe you on the visual aide you move your head or you touch your head; and the Glory of God manifests. You are an anointed man of God. It doesn't matter how long ago you had recorded a song. I feel the presence of God. I know because when I teach the word of God the Glory of God manifest; Every time I get up to speak God takes control. That is how I recognize that God is using you. He is rewarding you. This is your season Pastor Daryl Coley. I thank God for you.

What a blessing it is to see that the man of God, the anointed psalmist is still allowing the Lord to use him. I have been a fan over the years and have at one point had every one of his albums. I learned how to flow in the adlib listening to him and am excited to hear he's working on another album. I love the comments about the delivery of the gospel message. It's so true. We need to be very careful about how we present Christ to the world.
