Lovkn: From an Arizona desert home studio to an international
listenership

Lovkn: "The Lovkn thing, this ministry, this newfound vision for my music came in just the last few years. It was birthed out of a season which was the most challenging season of my life, I can say with confidence, to this point. It was a season that lasted about a year. I'd been making music but I didn't have much music online. One of the ways that I found my healing was turning to worshipping Jesus. That was not an easy decision in that season of life. One of the songs on 'Into Freedom' is about worshipping when we don't feel like worshipping God. So for me, choosing every day during that season to turn to worshipping it seems the Lord would give me the songs to sing. I needed my own song of worship. It was like there was not even one song that I could listen to that already existed in the world that I could latch on to and would help get me through. It had to be my own song.

"So I got all of these songs together - 50 plus, every day there was a new song. I felt like the Lord was saying, 'I don't want you to keep these songs on a computer library; put them out'. If there's one person that could be turned back to the Lord and is walking in a similar season that I was, by me putting my songs out then it's worth it to me to put all my songs out. That led me to putting 'I Will Not Refrain' out. Essentially it's a collection of home demos; it's nothing fancy, very bare bones. It's a recording of me, my guitar and my piano. It's an intimate, heart cry song. That was a more unpolished album with seven songs that came from that season. 'Into Freedom' was more sort of composed, intentional, like I'm going to make 14 tracks instead of seven. I spent about three weeks in my room here busting that out and trying to make it a little bit more polished than 'I Will Not Refrain'. If you listen to it, it is a raw, unpolished example of my work up to this point. We're talking a laptop, an interface and one microphone; altogether maybe a thousand bucks. You can do a lot these days with little."

Tony: That must be a very good mic you've got there and you got that for a relatively small amount. From your recordings, and I haven't heard that many, but it sounds as if you had a good pro mic there.

Lovkn: "It must be the magic of my little room here that I'm recording in."

Tony: Of all the songs you've had out so far, which ones have been the best received? Which ones have been touching people?

Lovkn: "Definitely my song 'New Life' which is a mid tempo joyful song. Also people found a lot of joy in 'Darkness In The Light'. These are the sort of songs that draw people in. They'll hear that song and think, 'oh, that's cool' and stream that song a bunch. But the songs I hear the most testimonies about are songs off 'I Will Not Refrain'. It touches people. It's so soft. I think it's the real soft songs that are from the heart. I try to make sure that I am putting out songs that I can fully back and believe in and come genuinely from the heart."

Tony: I understand one of your songs has received some interest from Britain's UCB radio station?

Lovkn: "Yes, I was over in England a while back playing at Creation Fest and somebody came up and said 'I heard a song of yours on UCB, that's how I first heard about you.' I said 'that's awesome.' I've now been back to Britain a second time."

Tony: Two trips to the UK in a year, that's cost you a bit.

Lovkn: "Yeah! But the other thing about it is, I see there's fruit that comes from that sacrifice. I'm excited that 'Holy Rain' has got Cross Rhythms play because 'Holy Rain' is a single from my new album, 'Pilot Of My Own Life', which was released on 13th September. I put 'Holy Rain' out at the beginning of August as a single online. Then I released another single, 'Come Sweet Jesus', then the single 'Never Fade Out'. I was able to release this album based on a Kickstarter funding project, which means that it was crowd sourced."

Tony: Tell me about the theme of "Holy Rain".

Lovkn: "The chorus says, 'Now I'm dancing out in holy rain, since giving you my life I've finally found my hope in pain/It's in your eyes that I find mercy, mercy and I find grace/And gravity is the only thing holding me down today.' When I wrote that chorus down I was sitting in the living room of my house. My sister was over, it was around New Year and I was kind of jamming along and it was a song the Lord just dropped in. It's easier to write the slow, moody, sad songs but there's so much joy and power in being able to challenge yourself to write something that's going to bring somebody joy and make somebody want to dance a little bit. That's exactly what that song's about. The song is a testimony of my own journey, of turning from my own ways of coping with pain and turning to God to come and bring hope in that pain and actually be the one who is able to pull me out of the darkness and into the light." CR
