Martyn Joseph: From Dolphins to Prostitutes, the Welsh songsmith looks for inspiration

Thursday 1st October 1992

"Dolphins Make Me Cry" was called lachrymose (given to weeping) by an unimpressed Q magazine but at least now they're noticing MARTYN JOSEPH. Gavin Drake reports.

In the first issue of Cross Rhythms you said that the Christian media can be a bit repetitive in its questions and never seem to get beyond basic biographical information that people can get out of a press-sheet. Now that your receiving mainstream media attention has the questioning improved?

"Yes, but not from the sheep! (Martyn was interviewed by a sheep for Children's ITVI). I suppose when I said that I was tarring everybody with same brush. But it is true to some extent that I had the same answers for everybody. I could almost have sent a tape round! Some of the mainstream interviews I've done so far are basically people trying to get information about me and therefore a lot of it is still biographical. With the Christian stuff I often wished it would go deeper than just 'when did I start singing' and stuff like that. But some of the interviews I've done have been really challenging, especially trying to express yourself as a believer without being seen as irrelevant and off-the-wall. I try to use sensible images to explain what I believe, so that I neither turn away from my beliefs nor alienate people. I was interviewed by the Daily Mirror yesterday and the sort of angle they're coming from kind of threw me. The reporter said: 'OK, so at the end of the gigs there must be a lot of girls so what happens when they want to go to bed with you?' I've worked all these years to be asked question like that?!"

OK, so at the end of the gigs there must be a lot of girls so what happens when they want to go to bed with you?

"I don't have a comment to make to Cross Rhythms about that! I just laughed and tried to belittle his questions without being rude to him. It wasn't so much a stupid question, it was just the bluntness of the remark that was so worldly and stupid. So I just ignored it. But if someone wants to ask reasonable questions I'll answer them." CR
