Sonflowerz: 10 Questions answered by the girl pop group

Monday 23rd June 2003

America's SONFLOWERZ, recently touring the UK, gave their responses to the famed quizmaster.

Sonflowerz: 10 Questions answered by the girl pop group

1. Who are the Sonflowerz and how you would describe your music?

(Becca) The Sonflowerz are Elissa Leander, 19 (guitar/ lead vocals); Becca Leander, 17 (bass/ bvs); Joy Caden, 19 (lead guitar/bvs); Shara Houlihan, 21 (drums); Jessie Gingrich, 20 (keyboards/ bvs). Our style is very much our own creation, but many refer to it as acoustic rock with an alternative flavour.

2. It's unusual for an unsigned "independent" artist from America to tour the UK. What gives?

(Shara) Yeah, it's unusual, but we're a pretty unusual band, being that two of us are half British (Elissa and Becca)! It fit so right to come over and share our music with you. But, above all, the thing we have most in common is that we have the same Creator and we know he deserves the worship of the world.

3. What's the best thing you've found about UK culture?

(Shara) They always feed us! And being that I love to eat, I think I might move to the UK!?

4. What's the worst thing?

(Elissa) This question is hard - I love the UK culture! I've practically grown up in it (with a British mom)! But, I must say that it is very difficult to have a five piece band gigging around England because of the narrow roads and small cars. In the States we take a big van hauling us and our gear, but here we had to have two cars, just for bodies!

5. What are your feelings on the Nashville CCM industry?

(Elissa) There's a lot that could be said here. As an independent band, we haven't fully jumped into the industry. We have recognised the way that the CCM industry can help a band reach more people, and in turn, more people can hear and know the Living God. But, we know that it's important not to let the industry change who you are and what you stand for.

6. What has been your most embarrassing experience as a group?

(Elissa) We had an embarrassing gig the other day, because it was outdoors. The wind and dust was blowing straight at us, drying out our throats, and wiping our hair across our faces constantly! We had a joke with the audience, "You have no idea what it is like to be in a girl band! It's so hard with long hair. Boys have it made!"

7. Who's your favourite - Matt Redman or Delirious?

(Becca) Our earliest influences as a worship band came from Delirious, but I like Matt a lot, too.

8. How did you get the name Sonflowerz?

(Elissa) It began as a joke with our friends as we drove home one night. Silly how band names always happen that way! But, it stuck because it fit perfect. We're girls and we desire to reflect the Son of God, growing towards Him.

9. Have any of you ever eaten Marmite?

(Becca) I did once! I've decided it's an acquired taste I will probably NOT acquire.

10. Who's your favourite New Testament Bible character, other than Jesus?

(Elissa) Probably Timothy, even though he doesn't write anything. In Paul's letters to him, there is a lot to be gained as we are also young and called to be leaders in our generation. CR
