Calvin Hunt: New York gospel man, a child of mercy

New York-based gospel man CALVIN HUNT tells of his deliverance from crack addiction.

Tell us your testimony.

Calvin Hunt: New York gospel man, a child of mercy

Calvin: I got really messed up with crack cocaine and I hit bottom because of it. I would be out on the streets for days, even weeks, without ever coming home or calling. I would go to places and do things I never would have in my right frame of mind. There were people armed with weapons, people giving up their children sexually to men for drugs in these crack dens. It was like a glimpse of hell. When the money ran out, I would come back home pitiful and sorry and really out of it. My wife was always there and she would always accept me back home. Then I would work and do the same thing all over the next payday. This went on for four years.

One day my daughter brought home a flyer for a movie entitled Cry For Freedom, about young people hooked on crack, and it was like my life story. That night I gave my heart to the Lord and I started attending church, but I kept falling and coming back. The pastors were trying to get me into a programme, but that didn't work. I ran from their help for a year until the pastor finally told me he had nothing else to tell me, that he had done what he could in the Lord. I felt alone, like I had nowhere to run, and I finally surrendered and went into a programme. I had to give up and surrender everything for the Lord to work in me.

That was several years ago and I thank God for finding me and picking me up from that. Now I can reach out to people who are hooked on drugs because I went through it. I know how they feel. That's where my heart is - to minister to those people.

Since you've been in ministry God's opened quite a few doors for you, hasn't he?

Calvin: Yes, he has. With the Brooklyn Tabernacle Singers I've received a Grammy and a Dove Award, I've been on radio and television shows like Good Morning America, Good Morning New York and 700 Club and I've played every kind of gig, concerts, coffee houses, homeless shelters, schools, prisons. I'm still working to reach thousands more with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. CR

I attended a church in Md. and Calivn sang there. I was touched by his music and testimony...... Purchased his music and listened to them over and over.
I'm relaxing listing to BTC ..... decided to look for Calivn and to my disbelief found out that he has passed away.
I'm in shock .... RIP my brother.

Like one of the above writers, I just found out that Calvin has died. I thought it was something recent when the announcer mentioned him as the "late Calvin Hunt". I was really shocked and hurt. I love his music. My older two children grew up with BTC. They knew Pst Cymbala like he was their own pastor. We used to spend hours watching BTC videos and we all loved the music. C. Hunt was one of our favorite singers. Seems like he had quite a bit of tragedy in his life. Sorry to hear that he succumbed to cancer. I will pray for the family, it's never too late to pray although it's been 4 yrs now. Wow! I plan to see him in heaven when the Lord returns which is really soon so that we all can enjoy his praises to God.

I am so sorry to hear of the death of Calvin. I met him after a concert at the Moody Bible Church. His music is inspiring as well as his testimony. I appreciate his wife who stood with her husband through thick and thin.

Good Bless and keep you Miriam and family!

My prayers go out to Miriam and family. I thank God for Calvin and the impact he has had and still has on so many lives. The first time I brought Calvin's video, "When you just can't stop" into the jail in Florida the men were dramatically affected by Calvin's transformation. That video was requested over and over again as a source of hope. When Calvin and Miriam were in Florida I had the privilege of meeting them in person. To this day I still cherish the moments that we were able to be together. I sensed a kindred Spirit from the first moment. Miriam, thank you for sharing Calvin with us. We love you in the name of the Lord and will never forget you. We are blessed to be a blessing and you have surely been a blessing in our lives. God Bless!

I am so sorry that I just found out today 7/19/2010 that Calvin Hunt was dead while listening to a Christian radio station. I was so shocked I looked him up on the internet and listened to his testimony which is just as powerful as it was the first time, and I am sure numerous times since then. I remember him so clearly and his music with the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. I just say that I know the body of Christ lost a true soldier of the Lord's army. God bless his wife and children and I know they miss him dearly but the Lord will help them to make it. Thanks for the memories of Calvin Hunt.

I just want Calvin's family to know that there are many of Calvin's friends who are mourning his death on Dec. 26, 2010. His wife and family are in our thoughts and prayers, and we can't imagine how great their loss must be. Calvin was a compassionate, loving, talented servant of Christ, he displayed that in so many ways while he performed with us. I, and many others, will look forward to seeing, and hearing him, in heaven one day. God bless and comfort you Hunt family!
