South African music pioneer Dave Ornellas dies

SOUTH AFRICAN pastor, conference speaker and musician Dave Ornellas died on 8th September 2010. After years of working in South Africa's mainstream rock industry with the band Hawk (renamed JoBurg Hawk for the European market) drug abuse took its toll. Ornellas made a life-changing decision for Christ in January 1976. With Christ bringing restoration to his marriage Ornellas turned his musical gift to gospel music and subsequently recorded independent albums 'Masters And Kings', 'Shiloh', (with his family) 'With Love' and 'Plugged In'. For many years he was senior pastor of a church in Mitchell's Plain, Cape Town. He ministered with his family at Cross Rhythms Festival 1995 and his son, Daniel, is a well known musician having played in the bands Naked Lyric and Tree63. CR

I had the pleasure of meeting Dave way back in the 80's. He came to the church that I was attending at the time. There was just something about him that was so geniune and kind that I will never forget it. The love of Christ was in his smile and his voice, rich and resonating. After all these years, I thought about him again; to hear him sing Masters and Kings.

I first heard Dave playing and singing in the early eighties. I loved his voice and musical style. Being a musician myself (bassist), I was positively influenced by Dave's passion for music and obvious love for the Lord. I still have the original vinal record "Masters and Kings". What an ambassador for the Kingdom he was.

Dave touched many people's lives. Awesome musician/singer/writer. There's a new voice in Heaven. When I get there I will be listening for it.
