Guy Penrod leaves Gaither Vocal Band to go solo

AFTER MORE than 14 years as the lead singer of the Gaither Vocal Band, Guy Penrod has announced he will be going solo. Said Penrod, "My years with the Gaither Vocal Band have been among the most glorious of my life. Now, though, with the Band continuing in strength and me tackling the new challenge of a solo career, we can all serve our God even more powerfully in the days to come."

Also leaving the Gaither Vocal Band is Marshall Hall who has sung baritone with the group since 2004. The new line up for the GVB (now for the first time a five-man group) sees the return of some of the group's best loved alumni. Effective immediately, the new line up will be Bill Gaither, David Phelps, Wes Hampton, Michael English and Mark Lowry. Mark Lowry will complete all his previously scheduled solo engagements through April 2009 and will appear with the Gaither Vocal Band at every available opportunity during this transition, beginning with the Gaither Caribbean Cruise on 22nd February. CR

THIS IS TERRIBLE! A DISASTER! I really hate to see Penrod go. He's been with the group since 1994 if I'm not mistaken, and in my mind really made the group so much better. I'm glad to see Mark Lowry come back because I think he's got a great voice and a great since of humor to fit it. But I can't say that I'm all that excited to see Michael English coming back. No offence to him or anyone, but I just don't think that he is the best singer that they could have gotten, and also considering his past, which actually I shouldn't give thought to. I'm sure the Lord has forgiven and forgotten, and so should I. I wish the best for the new GVB lineup, and I still hope that I get to play piano for these guys one day, before the group changes again.

Yes, it will be different without Guy, but that is not a bad thing! Change is good for everyone, and Guy needs to be on his own, where his gifts can truly shine. As for Michael English--I have followed his career and have loved him from the start. NO ONE has a right to judge him because of his past because we all are sinners and fall short. Thank God, Michael is recovered and back where he belongs!

Reply by Rob in new freedom, pa, usa @ 14:03 on Mar 13 2009

How unfair for you to even consider Michael English's past...His voice, although probably one of the best next to Larnelle Harris and David Phelps, could be a okay thing to consider, but his mistakes are off limits to anyone but God. If HE is forgiving, and can cast our misdeeds into the sea of forgetfulness, who are you to judge. Read your Bible and re-visit your salvation. Jesus died for all of our sins...Michael, and none of the rest of us are exempt.

guy penrods departure is sad news to this gaither fan, guy penrod has been a steady rudder in the gaither family in more ways than one, he has the Holy Spirit all over him as he sings, Howard, Vestal, Jake, Brock, Rex, J.D., these great giants are in Heaven and guy was still a reason to not miss the gaither family on a visit. guy penrod you will be missed.

Reply by Pat in New York @ 20:30 on Apr 25 2009

I just saw the new Gaither Vocal Band in Ottawa and it is fantastic! Unfortunately Mark Lowrey could not be there, but Michael English was incredible and so was having David Phelps back. As always, Wes Hampton and Bill were great. It was a glorious night and honored the Lord. Thanks be to a God who does not judge us on our pasts after we have been washed in the blood of the Lamb!

Guy Penrod, in his humble understated way, has been the power in the GVB - Bill is the organization and other have great voices but no one came replace the character and Godliness Guy has demonstrated again and again. There were no advertisements, no online promotions but the grapevine finally prompted me to call the Music City Centre at Branson, MO - Guy Penrod, alive and well and in concert there on August 30, 2009. If you are truly a fan of his and want to show your support, get thee to Branson!!!

I seem to be the last one to know that Guy has left the Gaither Group, believe it or not, its been wonderful to watch you all guys, the amazing work you all do and of course Guy and his long hair was like icing on the cake, but, God has got a wonderful plan for each one of us and I can already see Guy blessing us in his solo career and I also believe, the Group as it stands today is all that God wants for today and we will still see even greater things that we never dreamt of Our God is a great designer/architecture. Me and my family love your ALL.

Kia Ora (Greetings) Atiria & Tai, I am just devastated, shocked, that Guy Penrod has left to pursue a solo career after 14 years with the GVB. I guess, there comes a time when one has to move on and explore other avenues in life, and venture out from their comfort zone. No doubt! Guy Penrod will wow the audience where ever he goes. Guy, as we say here in Aussie, Best of luck mate!! God Bless you Guy and your family. Penny the (Kiwi)

seeing Guy go is sad he has been my hero since i saw him sing. I guess its time for new and exciting changes for him and GVB. As for Micheal i think he possess one of the most beautiful voices and i believe judging him is not in our judrisdiction but Gods

Reply by judy in Crawfordsville, IN @ 02:14 on Mar 2 2009

Yes, he does have a beautiful voice, and I thought his version of "Give Up" on the GVB reunion video was outstanding. It made me think Michael needs to get back into singing with the group.

I was toatally in shocked when I heard that both Guy & Marshall was leaving the GVB, Guy just is a sweetheart & his voice melts my heart to me his voice gave so much to the GVB, I wil deffinately miss him & I do want to wish him all the best. Marshall, oh man could he ever sing his voice gave me chills when he sang I loved the way he sang Jesus Loves Me on the Give it Away CD & DVD. Both Guy & Marshall have a very special gift from God & their voices will be missed. God Bless & Best to you both.

It's really sad hearing the news that Guy and Marshall leaves the band.. I do sing their songs at our church and it has been a blessing to me spiritually. These guys are my favorite Gospel singers.. I really can't belive it but i think it's the way God meant it to be. And i'm really lookin' forward to their new encouraging songs! Keep on keepin' on Guy and Marshall! God bless you two!

I'm so happy and so sad at the same time. I adore Mark and Michael and David but I'll miss Guy and Marshall so much. Can't it be a 7 man band? lol

Posted by FRAN in DENVER @ 20:56 on Feb 11 2009

HOMECOMINGS WILL NOT BE THE SAME WITH OUT GUY. I HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE AT 4 HOMECOMINGS INCLUDING THE THE RED ROCKS IN COLO. I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING MARK AND DAVID BACK, AS I THINK THIS IS WHERE THEY BELONG. I WILL GREATLY MISS GUY. BEST OF LUCK TO ALL .

Posted by Donna in Ohio @ 06:45 on Feb 17 2009

I will miss Guy a lot! He had such a huge presence about him. I love all the others-Mark, David but I just think that Guy more a less helped make the Gaithers. He was the first singer I seen when I started to watch and get to know the Gaithers. I will miss him and I wish him and his family all the blessings God can give! Maybe I get to buy more of his music if he does go solo?

Posted by Phyllis in Shreveport, La @ 15:08 on Feb 17 2009

Does anyone know when or where Guy will start his solo concerts?, Is there a website for him, or a fan club? I cannot find anything, He is greatly missed.

Guy Penrod is scheduled to appear at Music Center Theater in Branson MO on 8-30-09.

I have the same question as Phyliss. Where and when Guy? I am a Guy Penrod follower and would like to know more about what you are doing?

Posted by Merlin Seske in South bend Inidana @ 00:17 on Feb 21 2009

I met Guy and Angie on the Alaska cruise August 2008 and fell in love with them. I have been praying for them every day for the past two years and felt led by God to do so. I pray I will get to meet them again and hope that Guy's schedule will be printed on internet or I will be able to get it so I can plan a vacation where I can get to meet him again. I think this family is a wonderful God fearing and loving family. I still want to meet Guy Penrod "again".

I was in total shock when I learned that Guy had left the GVB. I immediately called my aunt as she has kept up with Gaither for many years and we both, together with my husband are in disbelief. However we know that the new band will do a good job and will continue to watch them on TV and on DVD's. Guy is just a great singer and Christian man. We listen to Gaither music at least five times a week.

My husband and I will miss Guy and Marshall. They added so much to the GVB. They are both great soloists but blend so well singing with the quartet. My concern is the Michaels do not blend well with the group. I can pick up their voices when they are singing a song that is a blend. I am very concerned how this is going to sound.

Posted by Marion Burgess in Capac, Michigan @ 00:01 on Apr 1 2009

We are all creatures of habit, and when you enjoy something you don't want it to go away. Guy was a light in this dark world, an example that could be followed.
We need to give him the space to go where God is leading him and his family, he has given so much to all of us.
God Bless both you and Marshall and all the talent He has given you .

I miss hearing Guy Penrod singing. His love for God shone through his voice. My life experienced a major change due to my husband leaving me and our children. Listening to Guy sing the wonderful songs of praise is what has gotten me through. Luckily I have the videos and DVD's with him. As for the new group I just don't feel the same passion for God in their voices. Guy, you are missed and I will be forever grateful to you for getting me 'Through".

Reply by Tina in England @ 09:05 on Jul 1 2009

Hi Dawn, I know what you mean. My children and I were also left by my husband. I have only recently started listening to the Gaithers and the music has blessed my children and I so much.
Guy is awesome but the new line up will be awesome too.

Posted by Jo in Minot ND @ 15:59 on Apr 1 2009

I was absolutely shocked to discover Guy's departure from GVB although I wish him the best with a solo career. I got the chance to see GVB in Bismarck a few years ago and that was an amazing experience! Guy has an amazing voice that blended so well with everyone else in GVB. You can see the joy and peace in him as he sings.

Posted by Beverly Rodgers in Barberton, Ohio @ 19:53 on Apr 20 2009

I think that Guy Penrod has one of the most annointed voices of anyone I have ever heard. He is so annointed by God and it just radiates from him. I
was so heartbroken myself when I learned that he had left. I like everyone else can do nothing but wish him and his family the very best. I don't think that the
Gaither Vocal Band will ever have the dynamic spirit
that it has had since Guy was with them. He just
added so much to it. I can see why he would want
to go solo though and with his talent I know that
he will be a blessing and a success whereever he
may go.

Posted by Don in Akron @ 19:37 on Apr 24 2009

My family has been Gaither fans since Gaither Trio and Henry and Hazel Slaughter days. We just went to the Gaither Concert in Cleveland, and while it was a wonderful concert Guy was definitely missed. Michael English may have a wonderful "solo" voice and I am not sure he is now GVB style. I must say that it was wonderful to hear David Phelps again. He has an unbelievable voice. GVB is missed as a true quartet!

Posted by LaVerne in North Carolina @ 04:41 on Apr 28 2009

This change of personnel is going to give us a new sound that I feel sure will be just as inspiring and the previous GVB. I appreciate the joy I experience when I am listening to them sing. With the talent Bill has in selecting voices for blend, I am sure this new group will be fine. I join so many others with best wishes for Marshall and Guy.

Posted by Judy in Florida @ 20:01 on Apr 28 2009

I, too, was devastated that Guy left GVB...but I understand and respect his decision. Just in case anyone is interested, his first solo concert is Aug. 30, 2009 in Branson, MO...and I already have our tickets!!!

This is a comment in response to all the postings about Guy. I hae been sick since hearing he no longer is with the GVB. He always said 4 voices are better than one and did not want to go solo. That makes me wonder what really happened. I will miss him so much. We don't get the concerts back here in the West like you guys in the East and South. I will probably never see him again.

Just like everyone else, I was shocked when I learned of Guy's departure. I feel sure that Guy had 2 great consultants when making this decision - God and Angie, in that order. You never know he may return one day to the Vocal Band. As we know, that does happen. I too would like to know why Marshall Hall left. I loved his voice and could feel the annointing on him also. He just glowed when he sang. If anyone knows anything about Marshall or his schedule, please le me know. My prayers and best wishes go out to both Guy and Marshall and their families

In this highly commercialized christian music business it is hard to find a singer as humble as Guy. We need more like him: singers not wanting to show off or just to sell.

hope he gets a hair cut . is he struck on himself ' is he singing for the right reason. and is he leaving for the glory of god ,or the bright lights for GUY PENROD something to think about.

Posted by Mary Scholle in Paradis, Louisiana @ 13:49 on Aug 2 2009

I spoke with Guy Penrod on one of the Gaither Cruises several years ago. My son had been shot in the head and left paralysed and with global aphasia and speaking is very difficult for him. When the Gaithers came on TV he would always watch and listen. One day he hobbled to the television and put his finger on Guy Penrod and said, " THIS ONE GENUINE!' I shared this with Guy and he put his hands up in the air and said, "Lord, I can sing tonight." There is a presence of God about him that you seldom see in others and this in itself is a precious ministry. We miss him and pray for him and his family where ever God is leading them.

Posted by lanna Barnett in Idaho @ 21:49 on Aug 2 2009

no, no, no. We don't want Guy to cut his hair, it makes him unique. Jesus had long hair. And Guy always sang for the love of God. He always seemed a little shy of the attention he got.

Posted by Dawn in Michigan @ 16:16 on Aug 5 2009

If you watched Guy Penrod sing how can you ask if he's singing for the right reason. In this world there aren't many individuals who reflect their love of Christ. He does and the values which he is raising his family with should be commended. The bright lights only detracted from the glory of God which came out in his music and praise. I wish him only the best and pray that God will continue to bless us through his music.

Reply by Cheryl in Tulsa @ 15:22 on Oct 8 2009

We were at the show in Branson and while Guy had some "first concert" jitters, it was a great show and he did an excellent job of interacting with his fans. His music has taken on a bit more of a Country/Western style but his spirit and belief in God is still very evident.

We heard the "new" group at the Kansas State Fair -w/ many standing ovations (yes, I said Kansas!) The group and the solo work (David, Mark, Michael, Wes,) was 'Gaither perfect' and as always Mark brought down the house with laughter. Guy Penrod is and will always be an absolute favorite but when does life ever stay the same? God leads us all into change and we follow. Blessings!

I wish to see you soon singing with your six or seven beautiful heros. My prayers are with you. Oh Marshal it's so sad to see you leaving so early to. Your voice made a perfect blend. Should have remained with Old Bil. Anyway wishing you all the best, Guy, Marshal and the GVB. We will continue to be your fans. We hope that you should at least made an effort to visit Fiji. We all love and admire the way you sing. Heaps of blessings as you serve the Lord in singing.
