The government has said it has "no plans" to ban counselling for unwanted same-sex attraction. The therapy, lumped together with other 'treatments' and pejoratively labelled 'conversion' or 'cure' therapy, was attacked during a parliamentary debate this week. But a government minister said that a ban would be "complex", as it would stop people voluntarily seeking the therapy.

On Tuesday, the European Parliament voted in favour of a proposal which threatens the UK’s system of voluntary family-friendly filters provided by the big four internet service providers (ISPs). The proposal requires ISPs across Europe to treat online traffic “without discrimination, restriction, or interference”, meaning that the current approach in the UK may well be unlawful by the end of the year.

Instead of providing security against hunger, the ‘welfare safety net’ is in some cases creating ‘insecurity and destitution’, according to a new report. ‘Restoring Faith in the Safety Net’, published by Church Action on Poverty, documents eight key holes in the safety net, many of which are leaving large numbers without income for months. The report reveals that up to £1.5bn of benefits and £560m of tax credits are underpaid in error, leading to hundreds of thousands of people missing out on money they are entitled to.

A Lancashire council has reversed a plan to remove a large wooden cross from a local crematorium. Reports this week indicated that the cross, which had hung at Accrington Crematorium for over 50 years, was to be removed for fear of offending non-Christians. Following criticism of the proposal, the cross will remain and only be taken down if specifically requested by a family.

Amnesty International has dubbed the conditions in Austria's camp for asylum seekers as 'inhumane'. Almost 5,000 people are housed in the camp in the village of Traiskirchen, about 30 miles outside the capital, Vienna. Bible Society of Austria's Director, Jutta Henner, backed Amnesty International's statement, calling conditions at the camp 'shocking'.

Ahead of the debate on the Assisted Dying (No. 2) Bill, polling commissioned by CARE revealed that 76% of people believe legalising assisted suicide would result in terminally ill people who believe they are a burden feeling a responsibility to access assisted suicide. In addition, of the 2,082 people surveyed, 86% of respondents felt there was a risk of politicians and NHS managers using subtle pressures to prioritise assisted suicide over palliative care. 52% of people thought patients opting for assisted suicide would experience no pain or discomfort, yet complications ranging from vomiting the lethal drugs they ingest to regaining consciousness are not uncommon in places where assisted suicide is legal such as Oregon and Washington States.

A third of people would consider a non-church location for their funeral and a quarter would ask mourners to wear colourful clothes according to a new poll of UK adults. Research amongst Co-operative Funeralcare’s own directors also found that nearly half (49 per cent) had arranged service in a location other than a church or crematorium.
