Eight out of ten people in the UK (83 per cent) would be unable to identify all of their neighbours in a police line-up, according to a recent study by Eden Project Communities. The poll of more than 4,000 UK adults also revealed that 10 per cent of Londoners cannot identify a single one of their neighbours.

Almost four million people in the UK have used a foodbank, the results of a poll published last week suggest. The study, commissioned by The Independent, says that one in 14 of those questioned had had to use a foodbank. Seven per cent of the 1050 British adults polled said that they had used a foodbank, which could mean that 3.7 million people have used foodbanks in the UK to receive a meal.

The latest Government statistics reveal yet another rise in the number of abortions in England and Wales, showing a 2.3% increase from 2016 to 2017. A total of 194,668 abortions in 2017 now brings the number since 1967 to some 9,000,000 abortions. That’s approximately 1 every 3 minutes.

On Thursday, the Department of Health and Social Care published the latest abortion statistics for England and Wales. In 2017, 194,668 abortions took place in England and Wales – this is an increase of more than 2 per cent (4,262 additional abortions)...There was one abortion every three minutes in 2017. There were 3,158 abortions carried out on the ground of disability, of which 20% (632) were for Down’s syndrome, 13 were for cleft lip or palate. 521 abortions on the basis of disability took place after 22 weeks gestation.

Demand for foodbanks has increased sharply by 13 per cent, two years after MPs suggested that it might have plateaued. The Trussell Trust reported on Tuesday that its 428 foodbanks gave out more than 1.3 million packages of three-day food supplies to approximately 666,476 people between 1st April 2017 and 31st March this year: a 13 per cent increase from the previous year. Eight new foodbanks were added to the network during this period.

The number of children growing up in poverty in working households is set to be a million higher than in 2010, according to a new study. Research for the TUC estimated that 3.1 million children with working parents will be below the official breadline this year. Around 600,000 children with working parents have been “pushed” into poverty because of the Government’s benefit cuts and public sector pay restrictions, said the report.

Marriage rates for opposite-sex couples in 2015 were the lowest on record, ONS reported last week. Rates were lower for all age groups, except for men aged 65 and over and women aged 55 and over. The number of religious ceremonies, which made up 26 per cent of all marriages between opposite-sex partners, dropped by eight per cent on 2014, compared with a 1.6 per cent drop in civil ceremonies...Since 1992, civil marriages have out-numbered religious marriages each year.

A clear majority of people on the Isle of Man support the right to life before birth and oppose sex-selective abortion, according to poll results revealed in February.
Research by ComRes, on behalf of Concerned Manx Healthcare Professionals, found that 70% of people believe the law should be defined so that sex-selective abortion is not possible, and 81% of people think all pregnant women should be assessed by a doctor before abortion to ensure that there is no coercion.

Loneliness and mental illness are by far the commonest community issues being addressed by parish priests in the Church of England, a new survey suggests. The survey of 1094 incumbents of parishes around the C of E was conducted by the Mission and Public Affairs Council and the Church Urban Fund to inform the latest Church in Action report….More than three quarters (76 per cent) of all respondents reported that loneliness was a “significant” problem in their community last year: 18 per cent higher than in 2011.

One in every four parents is worried about not having enough to eat, the results of a new poll published this week suggest. In a survey of 2032 adults this month, 23 per cent of parents of children under the age of 18, and 27 per cent of parents of primary-school-aged children, said that they had either skipped, or seen someone in their household skipping, meals…The poll was commissioned by the End Hunger UK coalition, which includes the Trussell Trust, Church Action on Poverty, and Oxfam.
