Promising to remain faithful will no longer be a legal requirement for marriages in Italy, if a controversial new Bill is passed, it was reported in December. Supporters of the Bill want to remove the word ‘fidelity’ from marriage contracts, as they claim unfaithfulness in marriage is outdated and obsolete. It has been backed by the Italian Senate. Its proponents want marriage contracts to contain the same wording as same sex civil partnerships, which were legalised in 2016.

New research from the Christian thinktank Theos has shown some Christian parents are not doing enough to help their children to know Jesus. According to the survey, only 36 per cent of Christian parents are keen that their offspring share their faith. When only those who attend church at least once a month were considered, the findings revealed 69 per cent of Christian parents were keen their children came to faith.

Rice maker Uncle Ben’s has commissioned a survey to understand more about Britain’s culinary interests. The results revealed: Almost 75 percent of children aged nine don’t know how to boil an egg. A total of 68 percent of parents said they only cook with their children once-a-month or less with 14 percent say they never do. 41 percent of parents said they wish they had more time to cook with their children.

A sperm bank has introduced a mobile phone app, believed to be the first of its kind, for women to select a sperm donor of their choice to father a child. London Sperm Bank Donors, nicknamed the ‘order a daddy’ app, allows women to ‘browse’ potential fathers based on desired characteristics, including physical traits and education level. Critics say that this app promotes eugenics and further undermines and trivialises parenthood, making both father and child a commodity.

UK adoption figures have dropped by 12% over the past year, in what is thought to be a failing of the government’s adoption policy, with more children going to foster parents and kinship carers. Although figures had risen over the past few years, after David Cameron introduced reforms, the number of children adopted fell from 5,360 in 2015 to 4,690 in 2016.

In 2015 there was a total of 203,096 abortions performed in the UK. 98% of all abortions were performed on the grounds that having the baby would be detrimental to the mental health of the mother. 27% of the abortions in England and Wales went to women who had already had at least one abortion and 1,030 of these had already had four or more previous abortions; 50 women were having at least their ninth abortion.

Women who have undertaken sex reassignment surgery to become ‘men’ are being given IVF treatment on the NHS, it has emerged. At least three women who have undertaken the surgery are “on the brink” of becoming parents using IVF, according to a doctor who works at the UK’s only ‘gender identity’ clinic. Bishop Michael Nazir-Ali said the procedure risked upsetting "the natural order", and that this would be very confusing for the child.

Children whose parents are married have higher self-esteem and increased life chances, a think-tank study has concluded. The Marriage Foundation found that children of married couples have significantly higher self-esteem than their counterparts from other types of family.

The number of people marrying in England and Wales has fallen for the first time since 2009. The Office for National Statistics said there were 240,854 marriages in 2013, down 8.6% on 2012.

Same-sex couples adopt 1 in 12 children. Statistics released from the Department of Education show that 120 children were adopted by same-sex couples in England in 2010. Last year, the number rose to 450 - a four-fold increase over the past five year.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that, in England and Wales, only 52.5% of women who gave birth last year were married. The percentage of children born to married parents has been declining steadily for years; the figure stood at 61% in 2000.
