A second World War RAF Spitfire has been excavated from an Irish peat bog almost 70 years after it crash-landed. Six machine guns and about 1,000 rounds of ammunition were also discovered by archaeologists searching the Inishowen Peninsula in Couny Donegal.
The British fighter plane was piloted by an American, Roland “Bud” Wolf, who parachuted safely from the aircraft before it crashed in November 1941.

Men are twice as likely to be distracted while driving a car as women, according to research from Santander. The survey found that one in ten men who has had a driving accident, compared with just one in twenty women, admitted to crashing a car because they were distracted. The study of 1,000 motorists revealed that one in twenty women reported near misses as a result of distractions while driving, which included adjusting the car stereo, eating or drinking.

New research has revealed that video game addiction is being cited in a growing number of divorce petitions. The study, by Divorce Online, examined 200 unreasonable behaviour petitions field by women using its service between January and April 2011. In 15% of the cases the wives complained that their husbands were happier to play on their games consoles then pay them attention. Divorce Online managing director Mark Keenan said his team carried out the research after noticing World of Warcraft was repeatedly cited by unhappy wives.

An extensive piece of research into obesity from Northwestern University in Illinois tracked 2,433 men and women in the USA for 18 years, looking at their change in weight. Their main finding was a striking correlation between regular worship and obesity. After adjusting for factors such as age, sex, education and income, they found that people are 50% more likely to be obese by middle age if they attend church weekly than if they don’t go at all.

More than 90% of women in their 40s and 50s are so fed up with their image; they suffer what experts have dubbed 'Mid-life Mirror Angst Syndrome', a study has found. Just 9% of those over 50 felt happy with what they see in the mirror compared with 43% of 20somethings. A survey of 1,200 women found that changes wrought by age, combined with a youth-obsessed fashion industry, led to a dramatic drop in body confidence for women the older they get. In fact, all of those in their middle age said they wanted to change something about their current figure, with a flatter stomach at the top of the wish list. This was followed by toned arms and cellulite-free legs.

They found that older elephants are the best at making crucial decisions about predators because they've experienced similar peril before. When researchers played recordings of male or female lions roaring to 39 African elephant groups in Amboseli National Park in Kenya, those with older matriarchs correctly focused their defensive reactions on male lions, which are the more adept killers.

Dogs are helping to save the lives of other pets by giving blood for use in veterinary operations. About 15 dogs were brought by their owners to donate blood at the session held yesterday. Canines have only been allowed to give blood for the past two years, since a change in the law regarding storage of animal blood. Since then, the charity Pet Blood Bank UK has been busy up and down the country, collecting blood to be used in life-saving operations.
