The latest Scottish Household Survey (SHS) has revealed that nearly half of Scottish adults are not religious. When a question about religion was first introduced to the SHS in 2009, 40% of those asked selected ‘none’ in the religion category - an increase of 10% points in the last 6 years. The most recent SHS also shows that there is a corresponding decrease in the number of people selecting ‘Church of Scotland’, falling from 34% to 25%.

A US study suggests UK women are more likely to pray and attend religious services than men. Carried out by the Pew Research Center, Christian women in the UK were found to be 16% more likely to pray every day than men. A Survey revealed in February that the majority of Americans value the Bible and want to see it have a greater role in politics as well as in the church. The American Bible Society’s fifth annual State of the Bible survey polled 2,000 Americans on questions related to the Bible, culture, the church and politics. Surprisingly, 51% of Americans said that the Bible has too little influence on society today. However, according to part of the survey summary, ‘one quarter of adults say they never hear the Bible read aloud at a church service or mass’.

A new study conducted in Canada has suggested that belief in powerful Gods is absolutely vital for the development of civilisation. The previous consensus among anthropologists has been that it was the advent of agriculture that allowed large communities to form cooperative societies. But this view is being challenged by archaeologists discovering that large ceremonial monuments seem to proceed farming communities and must have been built by communities working together under one belief system.
