Around 70% of Muslim prison imams subscribe to a hard-line interpretation of Islam, an independent review has warned. The study, conducted by the Home Office, is to be published next month. Commissioned by Justice Secretary Michael Gove, the research surveyed 200 imams working in UK prisons.

Hindu nationalists have hit out at Christians and Muslims in India, after the number of adherents to ‘Bharatiya’ (traditionally Indian) faiths fell, according to the recently released results of the 2011 decennial national census. Although the overall proportion of Christians fell marginally in the last decade from 2.34% to 2.30%, there was a 13% increase in the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh, causing Hindus to complain of a ‘serious religious imbalance’ in the state.

Britain is no longer a Christian country and should stop acting as if it is, said a major inquiry into the place of religion in modern society commissioned by the Woolf Institute. The two-year commission chaired by the former senior judge Baroness Butler-Sloss and involving leading religious leaders from all faiths, calls for public life in Britain to be systematically de-Christianised. It says that the decline of churchgoing and the rise of Islam and other faith mean a ‘new settlement’ is needed for religion in the UK, giving more official influence to non-religious voices and those of non-Christian faiths.

Nearly half the UK population has no religion, according to a new YouGov survey for Lancaster University. The research found that 46 per cent of adults of all backgrounds have no religion, while 42 per cent say they are Christian. Those with no religion have been dubbed the ‘nones’.

However, according to new figures, in 2010, Christianity increased to 12.6 per cent of UAE's population and 4.4 per cent of Saudi Arabia's. A report led by Baroness Butler-Sloss which said that Britain is no longer a Christian country has been criticised by cabinet ministers who said it was ‘seriously misguided’ and by the Church of England which claimed it appeared to have been ‘hijacked’ by humanists. The report into religion and belief in Britain, calls for a ‘new settlement’ for religion because the religious landscape has been ‘transformed’ by a growth in non-Christian religions and numbers of people with no religion.

Christianity could completely disappear from parts of the Middle East within five years according to ‘The Aid to the Church in Need’ document. It says if the exodus of Christians from Iraq continues at existing levels Christianity will be wiped out in the country by 2020. The report also says that Christians in Syria number as few as 500,000 today compared to 1.25 million in 2011.

A survey in Scotland has found that almost half of Scottish adults do not identify with any religion. The Scottish household survey saw 47.3% respond ‘none’ when asked about their faith. Five years ago the figure was 40%. The Church of Scotland is still the most popular denomination in the country, with 27. 8% of the population identifying themselves as part of the Church.
