In August, Khartoum Central Church, where 550 Christians had been meeting each week, was closed by government agents. They said the reason for the decision was that the building was registered as an office but was being used as a place of worship. When some of the church's leaders went to the security office to try to stop the church from being closed, they were surprised to be shown a document signed by a senior church board member declaring that the property was only to be used as an office and not as a church. It is suspected that the board member signed the document under pressure and was told not to tell anyone.

A Christian man appeared in court on June 24 under Egypt’s blasphemy law for ‘liking’ a Facebook page that local Muslims deemed offensive to Islam; the case prompted attacks by Islamists on Christian property. Kerolos Shouky Attallah (29) from a village near Luxor, was charged with showing disdain or contempt for a heavenly religion, which carries a penalty of between six months and five years in prison, or a fine. The Facebook page is run by a group of converts from Islam.

When Mosul fell to the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS) on 6th June, the city’s last remaining Christians, who are thought to have numbered around 35,000, were reported to have fled the city. As open war between the Shia and Sunni Islamic factions takes place, Christians are one among a number of groups who have found themselves caught up in the turmoil.

New report documents 241 cases of intolerance against Christians in Europe in 2013.

The Austria-based Observatory on Intolerance Against Christians in Europe has reported that the number of "hate-related incidents against Christians in Europe are rising", with incidents ranging from vandalism against churches to bullying in the workplace and violence against Christians pro-life campaigners.

The report notes that incidents of intolerance have also involved limitations on free speech by hate speech legislation and restrictions on the freedom of conscience of Christian employees, with the most affected groups including medical staff, marriage registrars and wedding facility owners.

A giant inflatable whale which Bible Society wanted to use to tell the story of Jonah has been banned from the Royal Parks because of its ‘religious’ undertones. Officials turned down applications to hold a children’s fun day based on the Bible story at either Hyde Park or Greenwich Park in London. The Royal Parks are owned by the Queen, who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England and the Patron of Bible Society.

North Korea has ordered the death of as many as 33 people because of their alleged contact with a missionary, South Korea’s largest news organisation has reported. The 33 North Koreans are charged with attempting to overthrow the regime by the setting up of 500 underground churches.

More than 2,000 Christians gathered in Colombo on January 26 to protest against a perceived lack of religious freedom in Sri Lanka, following recent attacks on Christian places of worship by Buddhist extremists. Two churches and a Christian prayer centre were attacked on January 12 by Buddhist mobs, claiming they were illegal and aiming to take Buddhists away from their religion.

Senior Liberal Democrat MP Sir Alan Beith has denied that Christians in the UK are being persecuted by equality laws, calling the tendency of some Christians to hide their faith because of such laws ‘silly’. The former deputy party leader said Christians were not being persecuted, but that poor interpretations of equality rules led some officials to assume that any public expression of Christianity might be offensive to atheists or people of other religions.

Members of the European Parliament condemned violence and persecution against Christians in Syria, Pakistan and Iran in a resolution passed on October 10. They expressed particular concern about attacks on Christians in Maaloula, Syria, and the suicide bombing of All Saints Church in Peshawar, Pakistan. They called on the Pakistani government to overhaul the blasphemy laws, noting that these were open to misuse, and urged the Iranian authorities to acquit and release jailed pastor Saeed Abedini.
