Schools in the UK will be rated for how ‘trans-friendly’ they are by an education review group, it was announced at the end of September. Bernadette John, a director at the Good Schools Guide, announced the move and said the issue of transsexualism in schools has been ‘building up’ in recent months. John said ‘inspectors’ from the guide will certainly be asking headmasters in the future about their treatment of transsexual pupils.

More than a quarter of English secondary schools are failing to offer religious education, research by the Department for Education (DfE) indicated in September. Data gathered by the DfE and obtained under a Freedom of Information request shows that 26% of secondary schools are not offering RE lessons. Among academies, which comprise most secondary schools, 34% do not offer RE to 11-13 year olds and 44% are not offering it to 14-16 year olds.

Boys will be allowed to board with girls at a top state school if they are questioning their ‘gender identity’. Gordon’s School in Surrey is drawing up new guidance for transsexual pupils which will allow them to wear the uniform of the opposite sex and be addressed by a gender-neutral pronoun.

Universities that use "no platforming" and "safe spaces" to shut down free speech could face action from the new higher education regulator, the Government has announced.
Jo Johnson, the universities minister, said young people and students need to "accept the legitimacy of healthy vigorous debate" as he outlined plans for the Office for Students (OfS).

Up to a quarter of secondary schools are breaking the law by failing to teach religious education, a new survey has shown, as one expert said the subject can be seen as an "easy loss" amid financial pressure. A survey published by the Religious Education Council and the National Association of Teachers of RE (NATRE) found that a quarter of the schools polled said they do not offer the subject to all students at GCSE level (aged 14 to 16).

Two year old children should be taught about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transsexual issues, according to National Union of Teachers (NUT). At its annual conference in April, delegates passed a motion calling for compulsory teaching of LGBT issues “throughout all phases of state education” including nurseries.

More than four in ten British adults believe primary-aged kids should not be taught about homosexual relationships, according to a new study. A YouGov survey commissioned by homosexual news website PinkNews found that 41 per cent of Brits would not expose kids aged 5-11 to such teaching, while 14 per cent said they were unsure. Interestingly, 12 per cent of LGBT respondents also said kids should not learn about gay relationships.

An Orthodox Jewish school has remained under scrutiny from Ofsted because it does not teach students about 'gender reassignment' or 'sexual orientation', even though it meets the required school standards in every other category. Ofsted said that the school's schemes "do not pay enough regard to developing respect and tolerance" as per the Equality Act 2010. Vishnitz Girls' School has pupils aged 3 to 8.

Across Staffordshire, only 53% of pupils met the new national standard in reading, writing and maths in 2016. At 45% the figure was even lower in Stoke on Trent. And in Cheshire East just 52% of pupils reached this benchmark. It reflected a 15% difference between children’s reading and writing scores – one of the largest gaps anywhere in England.

Head teachers at the National Association of Head Teachers conference have backed a motion which could see a shorter school week introduced. The idea to bring in a four and half day week in schools around England is one measure proposed to cope with what the national audit office says are budget cuts of £3bn by 2020. Heads at the conference said ministers had not been listening to their concerns and they were now exploring all available options to protect education.
