A survey in Scotland has found that almost half of Scottish adults do not identify with any religion. The Scottish household survey saw 47.3% respond ‘none’ when asked about their faith. Five years ago the figure was 40%. The Church of Scotland is still the most popular denomination in the country, with 27. 8% of the population identifying themselves as part of the Church.

It has emerged that at least 25 women in Britain who have never had sex, have given birth in the last five years using IVF. At least four British IVF firms were involved in assisting the women. The treatment is not available to heterosexual virgins on the NHS but they can attain the treatment privately for around £5,000.

A Lancashire council has reversed a plan to remove a large wooden cross from a local crematorium. Reports this week indicated that the cross, which had hung at Accrington Crematorium for over 50 years, was to be removed for fear of offending non-Christians. Following criticism of the proposal, the cross will remain and only be taken down if specifically requested by a family.

A Christian law school must change its code of conduct to embrace homosexuality to keeps its accreditation, a court ruled in July. Trinity Western University (TWU) in British Columbia had planned to open a law school which followed a Christian ‘community covenant’ next year. Students would not be permitted to engage in ‘sexually intimacy that violates the sacredness of marriage between a man and a woman’. TWU said that the ruling violated their rights as a religious institution and plans to appeal.

A survey of retail workers by shop workers' trade union Usdaw shows that 91% of staff at large stores are opposed to the government's plans to relax Sunday trading laws. The number one reason for opposition was the detrimental effect it would have on family life. Workers also expressed concern about the additional pressure they would come under to work on Sundays.

Almost six out of ten people in England say they are Christian, according to a new poll of carried out by ComRes. But only two in five believe that Jesus was a real person, showing a high degree of Biblical illiteracy. And just nine per cent of those identifying as Christian pray regularly, read the Bible and attend church at least monthly.

Amnesty International in August dubbed the conditions in Austria’s camp for asylum seekers as ‘inhumane’. Almost 5,000 people are housed in the camp in the village of Traiskirchen, about 30 miles outside Vienna. Bible Society of Austria’s Director, Jutta Henner, backed Amnesty International’s statement, calling conditions at the camp ‘shocking’. Bible Society makes Bibles and portions of the Bible available within the camp.
