Islamic extremists in July put up posters in an east London borough declaring it a shari’a controlled zone. The posters boldly claim: ‘You are entering a shari’a controlled zone. Islamic rules enforced’. Underneath are images indicating that smoking, alcohol and music are banned. A police spokeswoman said: ‘Officers are working closely with the local authority to have the posters removed as soon as possible.’ The posters come as a Bill in the House of Lords seeks to stop shari’a law taking root as a parallel legal system.

Comedy actress and scriptwriter Sally Phillips told Premier Christian radio how her faith affects her work. The star of the Bridget Jones films and TV sitcom 'Miranda' said that she was prepared to take on all kinds of roles reflecting various aspects of human nature and to write controversial material. She said: 'I don't think everyone should be doing neutral, family-friendly stuff. There is a role for the Christian as a kind of prophet. A comedian stands outside society and looks in and points out hypocrisy.'

The books that Jews escaping Nazi Germany fled with are being returned to their homeland to teach children about the Holocaust. The Goethe Institut, the German government-funded cultural body, is receiving crates of books in Israel in the 'Keine Leichte pakete' (No lightweight packages) experiment. Detailed biographies of those who originally owned the books have been collated by Caroline Jessen [who said] 'The name of the project "No lightweight packages" refers not only to the physical weight of the books but also to the burden of history they carry.

Young Christians give much more support to their Muslim peers, in comparison with young people who have no religious faith, according to new research. The University of Warwick survey found that 79 per cent of practising Christians believe Muslims should be allowed to wear headscarves in schools. This compared with 60 per cent who have no religion and 59 per cent for nominal Christians.

If you have finished the Times crossword and are looking for a new cryptic challenge, Oxford University has just the puzzle for you. It is looking for volunteers to help to find the next lost Gospel. The university is seeking tens of thousands of volunteers to help to transcribe the Greek letters on more than two million pieces of Ancient Egyption papyri.
Researches have found a previously unknown uncanonical ‘gospel’ with stories of Jesus casting out demons…Now ordinary people who need not speak or read a single letter or word of classical Greek, are needed to play a part in translating thousands more of the ancient documents.

The proportion of young teenagers who have smoked, drank alcohol or taken drugs appears to be dropping, with attitudes hardening against the habits, figures suggest.
‘As well as a reduction in the percentage who say they partake in these behaviours, a shrinking number think that drinking and drunkenness is acceptable among their peers,’ [said Tim Straughan, chief executive of the NHS information centre]. Colin Shevills, director of Balance said: ‘In many ways our young people are setting us an example.’

The Vatican reported a budget surplice for the first time in four years in 2010, but said contributions from Catholics and dioceses around the world had gone down…Worldwide giving to the Pope decreased in 2010, the statement said. Peter’s Pence collected £42.8 million, compared to £2.1 million in 2009. The contributions of dioceses amounted to about £17.3 million, compared to £20 million the previous year. The Holy See, which depends largely on investments for its annual income, had income of about £205 million and expenses of about £196.5 million. Vatican City State had income of about £213.5 million and expenses of about £196 million.

The government has indicated that it will not include religious education in the English Baccalaureate for 2011. The Department of Education’s latest Statement of Intent – an annual statement which sets out the proposed content of performance tables – indicates that the make-up of the English Baccalaureate is to stay the same. Campaigners have been asking that RE be included among the subjects that make up the baccalaureate, which is a measure for performance tables. They argue that if it is not, schools will sideline the subject.

The British Library aims to raise funds to buy the St Cuthbert Gospel, the earliest intact European book. The book was produced in the 7th century and was buried alongside Cuthbert on Lindisfarne. It was later found in the churchman’s coffin after his body had been moved to Durham Cathedral. Since 1979, the book has been on long-term loan to the British Library, where it is on display. Last year, the British Library was given first option to acquire it. The British Library is in the process of raising £9 million for the book by next march.

A cash-strapped council has been warned by central London churches that it risks losing valuable volunteer-led social services if it introduces Sunday parking charges. Church attendances could be ‘shattered’, say representatives of Churches Together in Westminster…The churches have launched a petition asking the council not to introduce the parking charges…Proposed charges in Oxford were branded a ‘tax on going to church’ by clergy there.

Archbishop Maroun Lahham of Tunis has asked that a policeman be posted in all 11 Tunisian Catholic churches after a man was arrested on charges of trying to set fire to Catholic buildings…Archbishop Lahham said the arrest of the suspect would help ‘calm people and encourage the arrival of Western tourists’ [and would] ‘reinforce the excellent relations with the Vatican’.

Israeli scholars in June confirmed the authenticity of a burial box linked to the high priest who condemned Jesus to death. After three years of testing the stone chest, or ossuary, the Israel Antiquities Authority confirmed that it is around 2,000 years old and that the inscription (‘Miriam, daughter of Yeshua, son of Caiaphas, priest of Maaziah from Beth Imri’) is genuine. The ossuary was designed to store the bones of Caiaphas’s granddaughter.
