Cross Rhythms has been pioneering a brand new model of community radio under-girded by Christian values since 2002 when we were part of the government’s pilot scheme. Ofcom have said that our station is, ‘clearly providing a strong community-focused service with strong community links, social gain and volunteer involvement’. Ofcom have allowed us to build a partnership/franchise model and so we partner stations in Plymouth and Teesside, but don’t own them, sharing activities and best practice and collaborating for greater effectiveness.
Our focus is to make a positive difference to communities by using media to deliver content that is applicable to the needs of everyday lives; promoting community issues, priorities, services and opportunities.
We also aim to give the local community access to training opportunities in a media environment.
In a feedback form for our Pre-apprenticeship Programme, the Skills Manager at the Department for Work and Pensions awarded us 5/5 (Excellent/meeting a vital need) for i) Concept of pre-apprenticeship programme, ii) Subjects of courses, iii) Compatibility of work experience with qualification, iv) Level of demand/need for this type of course, v) Confidence that courses would improve general employability, vi) Confidence that courses would develop skills employers are looking for, vii) Confidence that courses would increase and develop motivation for education, viii) Level of demand/need for qualifications.
In running the Pre-Apprenticeship Programme, Cross Rhythms has over 10 years experience to draw upon of running a successful Volunteer Programme and work experience for those in education. Annually we have around 70 volunteers and 15 work experience students.
In 2011 we were acknowledged at a regional level as one of the best work experience business placement providers for students. The awards were organised by the Newcastle and Kidsgrove District Employer Engagement Partnership.
Many volunteers have notified us that they have secured a job with other radio stations and places of employment, as a result of their work experience with Cross Rhythms.
