Some four years have passed since the release of 'Paper Chain', a somewhat mediocre album that revealed a fine band in the making. Since then, these Welsh rockers have had time to hone their art through rigourous gigging, resulting in a tighter, more focused approach to their art. 'Spiral' boasts a healthy progression in both sound and direction, where alternative, metal and hard rock combine to create an intriguing and dynamic hybrid of sonic intensity. Though unquestionably unique, there are definite traces of Galactic Cowboys, Bride and even The Cult's musical influences throughout the proceedings. Stand out tracks have to be the bass driven Cowboy-esque metal crunching "House Of Cards"; the retro-hard rock of "Shake Me"; "Spaceways Reunion" with its alternative metal grove, and the stunning "Foolin". Personally, I feel that whilst there is a much healthier and more mature sound to the material contained herein, "Spiral" is slightly marred when it comes to the chorus section of certain songs, where over repetition threatens the overall impact of the composition. This aside, 3rd Day Rising's second release bristles with tight musicianship, excellent vocal delivery courtesy of Chris Edward's, and a set of well produced and arranged songs. "Spiral" is a fine album from one of the more exciting bands to have emerged from within the UK in recent years.
