Above Only are a Memphis, Tennessee four-piece who impress hugely on this debut release. The boys show a stunning level of song writing and musicianship that has been perfectly harnessed by producer Ben Kasica. "Better Memories" and "Hear Me" in particular display a high level of writing maturity and give great optimism for the future. Vocalist/guitarist Sam Ward has a great "classic rock" voice - powerful and emotive with a good range. The solos from lead guitarist Tim Dills flow well with the songs rather than being tacked on, and his backing vocals complement Ward's. Meanwhile the rhythm section is solid and driving and adds some flourishes without being overly flashy. The band utilise their talents over a range of songs, from the rockier numbers, to the quiet-loud-quiet dynamic ones via the power ballads. In fact, everything the modern alternative rock group needs in their arsenal. They are also armed with spiritual, hope-filled lyrics that are personal but non-specific enough for the listener to interpret for themselves. There is a huge Alter Bridge influence on their sound, but they are more than mere clones. Reading their online material shows a band with a deep grounding in their faith, and their heads screwed on tight. They firmly believe that they have been brought together at this time by God for a purpose, and with this showing, I for one am not going to argue with them.
