Cumbria-based three-piece Accelerate showcased their brand of British modern rock on the CD that accompanied the April/May edition of Cross Rhythms. Here we have the opportunity to listen to six whole songs, so what do we get? Musically the band sound pretty tight, and the EP indicates that band leader Ben Holliday writes a decent song! Sometimes there's a tendency towards Delirious? territory (just check out the title song or the closing "Embrace" which like most of the stuff here sound like they want to be on the Cutting Edge recordings!), but then it's understandable that the Littlehampton lads will have influenced many a musical young man across the UK to pick up a guitar and sing about their Lord. The EP does suffer from a bit of a clumpy production, and the vocals sound like they were recorded at some distance from the rest of the music and in a toilet. But stripping away the budget restrictions, Accelerate have the potential to shape up into an inspiring band but need a stronger recording than this to really make an impact.
