Released in October 2016, Albert Bevia from Segorbe, Spain, describes his debut release as an EP although with seven songs I reckon it's a mini-album. Either way, one certainly gets one's money's worth. As soon as this EP started to play I was back in my parent's orange Morris Marina listening to the latest single to be released by The Cure with its layers of guitar lines and synths and I'm sure that I'm not the first and I won't be the last reviewer to draw on that unmissable comparison. These songs are cleverly put together, especially on "Dear Dad (True Love Never Fades)", where competing guitar hooks work so brilliantly in the background to underscore the sadness and confusion which is expressed in the lyrics. It's not just the top end that packs a punch, this collection of songs is underscored with some imaginative bass slide and pops on display, especially on "Ms Pickles", and it would be a shame to not mention the drumming backbeats on "His Kingdom Will Rise". Lyrically melancholy at times but always juxtaposed with some playful musical arrangements, this EP is a must listen.
