One would be foolish to predict that this excellent recording marks the end of the story of Vivaldi’s sacred music. This collection includes the first recording of the newly rediscovered “Nisi Dominus” from 1739 and in his helpful notes Michael Talbot hints that a “Salve Regina In E Minor” may also have been found. As well as the possibility of new material coming to light there are also changes in performance over time. One can say with confidence that Robert King and the King's Consort have reached the highest highs over these 10 volumes but in years to come others may approach the material in a different way. But let tomorrow take care of itself. What we have here is a magnificent “Gloria” (RV589), the “Nisi Dominus” (RV803) already mentioned and “Ostro Picta” (RV642) all played and sung as well as the preceding nine volumes, which is very well indeed. To conclude we are given a “Gloria” by Giovanni Ruggieri that was enjoyed by Vivaldi and later borrowed by him, as heard in the opening “Gloria” on this CD. Dedicated followers of Vivaldi will want to complete their collection, those who enjoy baroque will like it too and those with just a passing interest may well be pleasantly surprised.
