Within seconds of pressing play, this five piece outfit from Connecticut are into their stride. Like many of their label mates, Ark Of The Covenant sit squarely in the hardcore genre and fill this debut EP with driving rhythms interspersed with plenty of breakdowns. The intensity rarely lets up after the initial whispered "This is the end" as Ark deliver chugging guitars, gang shouts and even a couple of speed metal breaks. The lyrics are full of Christian images and hope and are delivered in a genre-typical growl. Although only a minor gripe, I did feel that the vocals lacked a little venom and clarity at times, but some higher screams and tradeoffs added variety. Most hardcore fans will find the first four tracks enjoyable, the highlight being the chaotic "Locusts Look Like Horses". There is, however, nothing particularly inventive here. But the quieter, worshipful last track "Separated" hints at the ability of this young band.
