Esther and Tim O'Connor are major players in the UK's still growing modern country/Americana scene and 'The In-Between' is their latest set of Nashville-inspired songs. "By The Fields" opens the album with its immediately catchy chorus and full band feel-good arrangement. To settle you fully into their Brit-country vibes is "People In The Valley". The song is about being united in our strengths and struggles, and whilst the imagery of valleys and nature are familiar enough for it to be relatable to country fans, the message remains engaging for all audiences. Inspired by the last execution of a woman in the UK, "Marilyn Curls" was co-written with Elaine Anderson. Its swampy blues guitars as well as a strong vocal performance from Esther O'Conor make it the strongest moment on the record. "The In-Between" is another sweet track. A gentle stripped back ballad about waiting for your lover's return. The record is rewarded for not over complicating itself. It is honest, simple and charming.
