Surrey-based BR James has quite a story to tell. Having been homeless at the age of 19 he has been on a journey through music and now enjoys a growing reputation for his soulful vocals and skilful songwriting. 'You And Me On A Mission' is a seven-track mini-album that showcases what he is all about with powerful vocals, uplifting lyrics and passion for God that shines through it all. He clearly lives and breathes music and you can regularly catch him performing live in the Hampshire/Surrey area as well as on Radio Woking where he presents his own show. Opener "Preludio" is a short intro track that sets the scene for the record drawing on a number of influences with a jazz beat, the gospel sound of a Rhodes organ lead and the soul tinged vocals. The beats and bass lines often draw in a laid back funk vibe most obviously on "Life On The Edge" and "Fires At Night" where a brass ensemble adds to the funk. The gospel sound is most prominent on "Still Around" with choir backing vocals echoing the lead and uncomplicated instrumentation. It is on "The Friend I Never Had" however, where the strength of BR's vocal really stands out. With just the piano as accompaniment, this is a brilliantly constructed ballad that really demonstrates the singer's ability as a songwriter and the power and flexibility of his vocal range. The closer "Outtro" demonstrates his gratitude to God and to anyone who may listen for the opportunity to make music, closing with the words "Thank You for the things You've done". To that I say you're welcome and keep it coming.
