Scottish power-pop rockers Back To Basics look like wacky chaps on the cover of this seven-track CD but then I have learnt never to judge a CD by its cover! Inside, the band actually proves to be sincere and intense in their performance and songwriting. The songs are chock full of message without falling into cliche and they range from the explosive guitars of "Destination" to the catchy chorus of "Say So Much". When this works, it's the combination of strong melody and Allan Hampson's lyrics connecting together. To these ears, "Tomorrow Is Another Day" works effectively, combining a melodic rock sound with an uplifting reminder that we need to trust our days to God. At the other extreme, the moody, reflective "Silent Voices" is a call for those whose hearts once burnt brightly for God to re-kindle the fire. Recorded on a budget, there are limitations in terms of the overall sound and sometimes I wish the band would be more adventurous musically so that these songs would move from being good to being great. But this is a workmanlike effort, which will serve them well as they play live and share their faith.
