Code Of Ethics were Cross Rhythms favourites in the '90s and now their frontman/composer/producer has returned with this crisply engaging album of worship songs. Where COE usually integrated a bit of a dance groove into their pop rock sound, here Barry takes songs that sound like they were composed on an acoustic guitar (and indeed like on the tuneful title song, feature that instrument). To this material Barry has added layers of punchy percussion, rock guitars and the studio man's trademark - some rhythmic keyboard lines. The effect is bright and fresh and brings a pop freshness to modern worship arena currently saturated by the Delirious? guitar rock template. In 2004 Barry had a horrific motor accident which caused permanent physical damage. But as he movingly recounts in the sleevenote Barry has found God's comfort and strength in his sufferings. As he writes, "My journey through this trial has been filled with the joy and sorrow conveyed in these songs." Sometimes songs written out of times of great travail can come out sounding introspective and even maudlin. But there's not a trace of such qualities here. Rather, the material, like the catchy opener "Be Exalted", "One Desire" with its unexpected trumpet intro and the walking bass rhythmed "Dear John", is all heart lifting, joyful songs produced by a man who knows how to interlock pop and rock rhythms around songs that consistently celebrate the lover of our souls. Welcome back Barry, we've missed you.
