Hmmm, now here's something that brought back memories of the adventurous spirit of Christian music in the late '70s. I just remember that in the couple of years that followed the punk explosion, something of the bug to create unfettered music fell upon certain Christian bands and the result was glorious. Okay, okay, so I'm an old git! But 20 years later enter the wonderfully named Bingo Tonight to combine the retro spirit of '70s punk passion with creative songwriting, a silly sense of fun and the result is an audio pile up that grabs the attention. I love it! There's the opening frenetic rollercoaster of "LSD" which quickly gives way to masterful "Monkey In A Mansuit". I have to admit I thought he was singing "monkey in a mincer" on first listen which you have to admit is a very strange image! But once I listened to "Money Where Your Mouth Is" at full volume the ear wax problem was alleviated. The closing "What Came First" sounds like something a young Ishmael might have been capable of in 1979. The result is an EP which is totally enthralling, unashamedly Christian and yet creative and ever so slightly mad. Not bad for a bunch of teenagers eh? You bet! Definitely book them for your youth group to hear live. Oh yeah, and one of them has veteran Christian songwriter Paul Field for a dad. Nobody's perfect eh?
