The Blunt Skulls are relatively new on the UK Christian music scene although some of you may have come across them in previous incarnations as Nuclear Suitcase and Nutty Brown Sugar Meringue - and their use of intriguing names extends to this EP release 'Enter The Bread Bin'! This West Country band have created a not altogether unique ska sound with hints of punk and ragtime, but with witty challenging lyrics. They sing about the everyday and to be honest sometimes the totally bizarre, but underneath you cannot deny the Christian relevance. In this day and age of sugar coated pop princesses and manufactured teenage rock you're unlikely to hear much in the way of ska and this is a refreshing and welcome change. Quoting from the opening track "Familiar Thoughts" - "Do u know what really bugs me is that/Their taste in music is wrong/By wrong I mean it's all the same/And they don't appreciate ska!" When was the last time you listened to a CD and can really say it lightened your heart and brightened up your day? Listen to this outstanding release and you will certainly have one of those days - guaranteed! The only reason this review gets eight squares is that this is a single and I'm reserving a nine or 10 for the full album which I hope is forthcoming soon. More please!
