In the same way that Darlene Zschech has become inseparably linked with a classic worship song ("Shout To The Lord"), the husband-and-wife duo now based in Sacramento are likely to be forever linked with "Holy Spirit" such has been the impact on the worldwide Church. But even if no new composition on 'Champion' enjoys quite the same popularity with worshippers around the world, there is no doubting that this album demonstrates the Torwalts to be exceptional crafters of modern worship material. Katie's exceptional, delicate voice heard on songs like "Emmanuel (God With Us Forever)" and "Come And Move" where Brian huskily pleads for the Spirit to come over some elegantly sweeping strings ensure that their songs make an impact. The couple say that 'Champion' is a celebration of the victory of Christ which enables us to overcome all our difficulties and disappointments and indeed the album's joyful moments, provocatively brought out with deft pop rock arrangements, exude that message. The uplifting title track praises God "who made a way when there was none" while "Mountain" reminds us that our Lord is worthy of praise in every season. No doubt the hipster reviewers will critique the album for its lack of lyrical depth or its Coldplay-style arrangements but really they are missing the point. The Torwalts, and indeed the whole Jesus Culture stable, are continuing to bring songs to the Church with the potential to inspire revival. I can think of few higher callings than that.
