Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852 – 1924) is one of the leading lights in Anglican choral music. As a teacher he influenced Holst, Vaughan Williams, Howells and many others. As a composer he reshaped and enriched the Anglican Cathedral repertoire. Christopher Robinson and the Choir of St John's College do Stanford full justice on this value for money disc. The key tracks include the anthem “For Lo, I Raise Up”, “Three Latin Motets”, “Morning Service In C”, “Communion Service In C” and “Evening Service In G”. Also, there are two organ interludes played by Christopher Whitton. This is Anglican choral singing at its best and, as such, is highly recommended.
