'Battle Of Life' is the product of Reading-based singer-songwriter Caleb Taylor's shattered childhood aspiration. He turned to songwriting following the disappointment of being unable to pursue his dream of playing professional rugby. This debut album demonstrates experience and maturity with interesting lyrical themes and rhymes and a smooth backing blend of bass, keys and funky drumming. However, it's the guitar - both electric, on "Rise Up", and acoustic, on "Don't Be Fooled" - that really shine. Most of the songs featured on this 11 track CD feature catchy melodies. Unfortunately, what lets 'Battle Of Life' down are the far from impressive vocals. Produced with an awkward sounding double-tracked voice, some of the falsetto high notes on "Here For You" are particularly uncomfortable. Elsewhere, the backing vocals on "Keep On Running" are pleasant and atmospheric. In truth, Caleb sounds most comfortable when he's rapping.
