Any concept album built around the subject of parenthood risks schmaltz overload and though I'm a parent who once cried when listening to "Butterfly Kisses" I wasn't exactly looking forward to this album, originally released in 2002. I shouldn't have worried. The Canadian singer/songwriter shows her usual impeccable taste while the accompaniments, be they the mandolin-driven pop folk of "Moving", the baroque strings of "Come Away" or the perky pop with horns of "The Thought Of You" perfectly suit Caroline's excellent songs. All stages of pregnancy are touched on from baby's first movement ("Moving") to growth both physical and spiritual ("Be God's"). As well as her own songs Caroline offers two covers, Carole King's "(You Make Me Feel) Like A Natural Woman" and Bob Dylan's "Forever Young" and both seem to fit quite well with the album's theme. All in all, a delightful set even if you've not embarked on the long journey of rearing kids.
