Hot on the heels of Volume 2, one of my favourite instrumental albums, not just of 1997 but of all time, comes another 12 Celtified worship songs new and old, but with a difference. This time, there are some vocals. Keeping up the Iona presence on this series, said vocals are by Joanne Hogg and her crystal clear voice sets the mood on the very first track, a superb arrangement by Nick Fletcher of Stuart Townend's version of Psalm 23. "Praise To The Lord, The Almighty" lollops along as a waltz-time jig, with some nifty fiddling by Chris Haigh; "O Breath Of Life" is a showcase for Dave Fitzgerald's recorder and Fiona Davidson's harp; Joanne reappears on "O Come, O Come Emmanuel", supporting Nick Fletcher's classical guitar with some ethereal scat singing; "Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind" is a delight, the musical pictures and Whittier's word pictures matching perfectly ("O Sabbath rest by Galilee/O calm of hills above"); "All Creatures Of Our God And King" has Teri Bryant's bodhran setting the tempo for another Ceilidh-style piece, and if I go on like this Boss Man Editor Cummings will cart me off to the Happy Home for Raving Reviewers. All I can say is, if I could give this 11 squares, I would: it's brilliant! Now go and buy it.
