While the Bible bookshop punters keep buying them, the labels will keep releasing them. It seems UK Christians have an insatiable appetite for instrumental albums of worship songs and hymns. This 2CD set has a cooler name and better sleeve design than a lot of those old 'Praise Him On The.' series of albums and producer and keyboard player Andy Green does put together some mellow groove synth backdrops behind Jason Roe's elegant sax. Repertoire-wise it's a predictable set of worship songs, largely from the '80s and '90s recorded too many times already ("Shout To The Lord", "There Is A Redeemer", "Abba Father"), one or two more interesting choices ("In You Alone" co-written by the wonderful Aaron Shust), a couple of old hymns ("Lead Us Heavenly Father Lead Us", "All The Way My Saviour Leads Me") and a couple of Andy Green numbers for good measure. Roe's playing is exemplary, jazz licks one moment, classical reverence the next. Are these sensitive readings of songs written to give glory to God, or more instrumental muzak for culturally lazy Christians? Well, that largely depends on your existing preconceptions.
