Quirky is becoming a much used word to describe the new wave of Christian female singers echoing the arrival of Morisette, Bjork, et al. Now we have Sarah Masen, Jeni Varnadeau and this release from Christine Glass, which has a fresh alternative pop sound. At turns vocally vulnerable and then ripping it up, Glass's Morisettisms are in place but that doesn't spoil the album because there is much original creativity here as well. In the enigmatic "I Believe" she sings, "Give me a chance and I'll show you that my love and faith are real." And that is a central comment on what is happening here as she unfolds her life and faith with songs that explore the human condition and intimate challenges of a relationship with God. I like the dancy vibe on "Waves", and the acoustic sound and memorable chorus of "Time Doesn't Show". Both songs see Glass finding God in the midst of struggle. I feel the same way about Christine as I did when I first heard Julie Miller, that here is an artist capable of making intriguing music that deals with the pain and realities of existence without veering into cynicism.

I knew her in college personally. She had a phenomenal voice which I only heard her use to lead worship for Campus Crusade and belt out the random Sandi Patti tune on occasion. She went by the name Christy Cox back then.
