Keep this CD out of reach of animals, infants and anyone who wants to stay lukewarm in their faith, God is closer than he may appear," screams the sleeve of Code Of Ethics' new album. COE have stayed true to their sound, sitting somewhere between WWMT's "Heatseaker" track and Psalmistry throughout what is essentially a worship remix album. Although consistent this tends to make the arrangements formulaic. Distorted guitars, beats and analogue basslines can only carry me so far even with unquestionable lyrics. It may seem like hard work but if when you first hear one of the tracks you like it, stick with it and you will end up singing them all. (With my voice and this album virtually glued into my personal stereo - it's just as well my train is always empty.) While on the subject of vocals, a female voice on the slower tracks might have made them less ponderous. Finally, watch out for the opening track "Hallelujah 2000" in my set at the Cross Rhythms festival.
