Lu Cozma and Gordon Vaughan began writing and performing together early in 2003 and got on so well that five months later they spent five days at No Machine Studios in Wokingham putting together this, their first CD. Afterwards, Lu said to Gordon, “It’s amazing what we’ve done in five months and five days,” to which Gordon replied, “Good name for an album.” The two of them have had their own separate music careers, Lu as a solo artist, and Gordon as a respected and acclaimed session guitarist in a variety of styles. But this is a nice slab of acoustic pop, all their past experience shows in the polished production, accomplished musicianship and good quality songwriting, and except for an occasional bit of tambourine, all the vocals and instruments are theirs. The opening track, “Shadowlands”, has a haunting minor key quality with some tasty slide guitar, and the rest of the album is more of the same; the closer “Open Up This Window” is another highlight. I don’t believe that this is intended to be a “Christian” album, as the lyric sheet reveals no mention of the Saviour’s name. Rather, the songwriting addresses real lifestyle issues in a straightforward, honest way, with underlying evidence of a Christian perspective and I could imagine this album being used as a non-threatening conversation starter which would lead on to meatier spiritual discussion. Worth investigating.
