Not often that I think my CD player is self-destructing but from the ear catching (or is that ear piercing?) opening moment of this solo effort from Bride's singer, there's plenty here to stimulate the old shell likes. Thompson's songs form a bit of a concept piece for the first half of this telling the story of a man whose life slides until he hits the skids and then meets Jesus. Not a particularly original storyline but there's something in the style of the telling that makes this interesting. It takes a bit of work to get into it lyrically but full investigation will reap rewards because these are some of his best lyrics ever. The music doesn't disappoint either as Thompson plays a variety of blues styles and sounds startling. Whether it's the Hammond and horn enhanced shuffle of "Thought I Met The Devil" or the walking bass of the cheap private detective style narrative of "Wringing His Hands" this is more than merely retreading musical forms. Genuinely interesting because it isn't obviously commercial and immediate, Thompson should be proud of his creation!
