Little expense has been spared for the solo debut from Hillsongs worship supremo Darlene Zschech. Delivered with consummate professionalism, the 14 US-recorded songs are a seamless fusion of worship and pop. Darlene seems to makes a more suitable candidate as a Celine Dion-like Christian chanteuse than Jaci Velasquez (see CR77). The worship/devotional end of the spectrum is well represented with the likes of "Shout To The Lord" (of course), "Pray", "Faithful" and "Beautiful Saviour", but "Everything About You" is a romantic ballad (for her husband) and for something a little different there’s a cover of U2’s "Walk On" featuring Delirious?’s Martin Smith. Whether worship songs can be packaged as just another highly-marketable commodity without losing their impact and authenticity remains a question for us all to ponder.
