Cross Rhythms magazine has been reviewing product by the prolific Mr Jernigan for getting on for six years, and in all that time, very rarely has anything scored better than five out of 10. Is he guilty of overblown inspirational excess? Is he no good at wriling decent songs? Perhaps, on listening to this, there's a point to be made for both those questions to be answered in the affirmative. There's some decent material here; "Somebody Big" is on the UCB Europe playlist, and rightly so; but only three tracks in, the style switches to some very middle-of-the-road stuff indeed. And not just middle-of-the-road, but banal and cliched middle-of-the-road. Another minus for me is the long preaching, teaching or whatever between songs, sometimes as much as a minute or more. There might be a case for the verbals to be put on a separate track from the song which comes before or after, so that those who find it irritating can programme their CD players to cut the chat and concentrate on the music. A disappointing effort from someone so experienced.
