Having seen this band at the Parachute Festival in their native New Zealand I can report they have everything to become a major international act both in the Christian and non-Christian marketplaces. So what puts them above the thousands of wannabes who are forever dreaming of the big time record deal? Certainly it’s not the genre – there are countless pop rock aggregations treading Detour 180’s particular musical furrow and though the production (by Jono Scarlet) is crisp and full, neither is it production wizardry which makes this set stand out from the crowd. What elevates Detour 180 into the winning circle are memorably hooky songs both mainstream (“Overrated” and “She Walked In” – the latter has gained some MTV exposure) and worship (both “Beautiful” and the anthemic “Hallelujah” are tremendous) plus having a lead singer, Adrian Robertson, with a particularly strong and expressive voice, means the whole thing clicks with an unrelenting freshness.
