About four years ago, Dissident Prophet were in the "band most likely to. . ." category with a mainstream contract in their collective pocket. Three failed singles and an album 'We're Not Grasshoppers' left the band simply a fond memory amongst the rock music cognoscenti. Imagine the surprise then when a new lineup returns to active duty and begins work on a new album. But while we await that, the band's leader, Andy Jennings, has thoughtfully assembled this 18-track trawl through the archives. There are loads of songs here to get excited about. There's a touch of Lou Reed in the deadpan delivery of the brilliant "What Would It Take?" and the vitriolic attack on the Catholic Church, "Rome". Another favourite is "Alright" with its quirky guitar sounds. I like the way the band incorporate Christian themes and subjects into the album without becoming sappy. Trying to work out if the band feels it's a tradition to always have one swear word on the album. This time it's on "Watching All Alone" and although not personally offended, it seems a shame. From the distorted guitars of "Revelation 13:16" through to the simply lovely string soaked "Fill My Cup" and atmospheric "Broken", Dissident Prophet sound like a band with plenty to say. And for a fiver, you really ought to be listening!
