Three-track single from former Felt singer Edwin Derricutt from New Zealand launches his solo career with the single "Write Your Name". The song is also to be found on Edwin's debut album 'Symmetry'. There is something troublingly familiar about this radio friendly acoustic pop with more than a touch a déjà vu about some of the sounds, turns and flavours. Closer listening rewards with more subtle elements though, using some of the same electro indie bleeps and glitch of The Postal Service, Athlete and David Crowder. It's rather odd that of the three tracks on the album, the final two are richer and more intriguing, suggesting what might be possible from Edwin in the full album. The heartrending chord progression on the verse of "Almost King" is worth getting the single on its own, as Edwin manages to combine some passionate portrayals of longing and searching without slipping into the worst excesses of lachrymose balladeering. A massively promising effort, though the more theologically astute of you may leave wondering exactly how Jesus can be the carpet in your lounge room (verse two, "Write Your Name"). Answers on a postcard.
