Although this album was released in 2009 it is not one to be overlooked. After an acclaimed first release that brought them exposure to a wide audience, it took three years to produce their second. The wait was worth it. The Texan rockers perform a brand of hard edge rock that is full of catchy choruses and hooks. The production on this recording takes the overall sound beyond anything heard on their self-titled debut. Crisp guitars and layers of sound that really fill your speakers replace the distortion heard in "I'm So Sick". To set this recording apart from many other polished rock acts are the haunting and mysterious vocals of Lacey Sturm that add an alternative edge to what could become a saccharin pop rock outing. Lacey writes gritty and sometimes dark lyrics that explore a range of topics with an unmistakable Christian perspective. Among the many strong tracks my favourites include the waves of rhythm in "Again" and the venerable, breathy vocals of "The Kind". With 'Memento Mori', Flyleaf have produced an accessible rock album that is ripe for radio play. Although they may have stepped back from being an all out hard rock band, this foot stomping rock is certainly a step up from their debut release.
