During the 1960s, Garnet Mimms was a soul star with hits such as "Cry Baby" and "I'll Take Care Of You". Then he left the music industry to become a pastor to prisoners for a couple of decades. Now over 70 years old, he's returned to recording and released this gospel set with songwriter and producer Jon Tiven. Country and blues influences are fused with soul in a way that can be imagined if Stevie Wonder, Joe Cocker and Bruce Springsteen were to collaborate. Mr Mimms has grit and determination in his voice, along with years of experience, and he sings as if each song has a meaningful story to tell. For anyone to sing this well, with such felling at this age is quite outstanding. The set starts off in a rather morbid manner though, with "You'll Lose What You Got". Thankfully the mood soon picks up with the funky guitar and bass duel of "Is Anybody Out There". Then "Limitless", "God Is Love" and "On Top Of This Mountain" lift the spirit of the listener.before finishing off with a lament about Jesus dying at the early age of "Thirty-three". That's blues, with soul. Timeless stuff from one of the GREAT soul singers.
