I had trouble tracking down much information about Gentleman At Arms, they have a MySpace presence that offers some background, but generally the music will have to do the talking. What I do know is that they are a Michigan-based four-piece that are fairly new to the scene, and this is their first recording. Their sound is alternative rock in the vein of Switchfoot, the opening track "When We Fall" is full-on rocking guitar and big drums, but with a melodic pop sensibility and a vocalist that can carry a tune. The second track (there are five on this EP) "Honestly" takes the tempo down a gear with some great backing vocals and ethereal keys. There is some good songwriting and intelligent production on this EP, the band are a talented bunch who are able to rock out with the best of them while simultaneously incorporating subtle electronics and pop hooks. The closing track, "Lay It Down", has some tasty drumming and a sound that is a cross between Franz Ferdinand and Muse. I look forward to hearing a whole album from the guys.
