Christian attempts at traditional jazz have been, well, let's be kind, distinctively derivative. Fancy a drop of the real, vintage stuff? This was recorded in 1954 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Oxford, Ohio, USA at a unique event. This programme of eight gospel and standard Christian songs was part of the church's normal Sunday evening vesper service, a radical move considering those misguided music historians always associating jazz with the seamier side of life. Rev Kershaw certainly went the whole hog using the top New Orleans band of the day. As well as Lewis' superb clarinet finesse, jazz fans will drool at a line up of Kid Howard (trumpet), Jim Robinson (trombone), Alton Purnell (piano), Lawrence Marrero (banjo), Alcide Pavageau (bass) and Joe Watkins (drums). The band makes no concessions to sacred surroundings and pieces like "Lord, You've Been Good To Me", "Just A Little While" and of course "When The Saints" are shown no mercy. Great music.
