If you're a long term Cross Rhythms reader you will know that Gregg was born and raised in the Cajun country of south Louisiana and calls his music "bayou blues and Creole soul". The music is excellently arranged and performed. The real brass section gives a breath of life to many of the songs and you can visualise those guys "getting down" in the studio! However, what really gives the music power is Gregg's voice, and boy does he have a voice! He sounds huge in power, and has a real soulful richness that you don't hear too much these days. Gregg sings with real passion/soul, and his voice is strong whether in a tender, emotive moment or soaring up high. His voice has been compared to Sam Cooke and I would say there are also some tinges of Gary Moore in there as well. The CD sounds natural, just as I imagine it would sound live, which is perfect for this type of music. It would seem Gregg has taken some notice of Tony Cummings' review of his previous CD as this time he has written nine of the 12 tracks here rather than them all being covers. Not all songs are explicitly Christian, but they mostly deal with important issues that are relevant in the schools/festivals etc that Gregg ministers at, like the reality of absolute truth, resisting temptation, divine guidance and not judging people by their appearance. The only one I don't really get is the title song about Pontiacs, Corvettes and Cadillacs.but then I guess we don't have so many of those southern open roads in the UK! If you like old school soul, check out this impressive release.
